SHELTER AND SUPPORT FOR YOUTH IN CRISIS

Overview and Referral Information

A program of the Idaho Youth Ranch, Hays Shelter Home provides 24-hour emergency care, counseling, and education for boys and girls between the ages of 9 and 17 who are runaways, homeless, or victims of abuse and/or neglect. Hays Shelter Home staffs the only 24-hour help line supporting vulnerable youth in the Treasure Valley. Services and referrals are also available to parents who need help addressing problems that disrupt healthy home environments. These problems include: parent/youth conflict; runaways; homelessness; school problems; abuse; neglect/abandonment; poor communication; and unlawful behaviors.

PROGRAM COMPONENTS

  • Safe, structured and nurturing residential shelter
  • Immediate shelter access available 24 hours a day, seven days a week
  • Strengths-based individual and family counseling from a master’s-level clinician
  • Group counseling includes anger management, social skills, and problem-solving
  • Support classes include independent living skills, health and basic living skills
  • Structured educational and recreational community-based activities
  • Parent-teen mediation and parent education classes
  • Accredited academic curriculum (grades 9-12) and GED instruction and testing
  • Victim of crime assistance and information

ADMISSION CRITERIA

  • Males and females ages 9 to 17
  • Youth who are runaways, homeless, or victims of abuse and/or neglect
  • Youth from families experiencing crisis
  • Support and services are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week
